Elementary Award Recipients

 

 

HEATHER MCCUBBIN

Heather McCubbin is a student at Nicholas Sheran Community School who has volunteered her time to help others both in and out of school.

 

This amazing 10-year-old volunteers with special needs students at Nicholas Sheran School during her lunch and recesses.

 

Heather, a grade four student, is also active in the Girl Guides of Canada organization. She is an assistant with Brownies in her role as Baby Owl.  As a member of the 15th Lethbridge Guides she has volunteered for various events including assisting with a senior’s block party, fundraising, painting fish on storm sewers for the yellow fish road program, telephone book delivery, cookie sales and has served tea and baking for the Guide Tea.

 

Heather’s enthusiasm, dedication and commitment

impress everyone who meets her.

 

TAYLOR STONE

Taylor Stone, an eleven year old student at Our Lady of Assumption School in Lethbridge, has obviously learnt the importance of helping others.

 

This grade five student has given her time to help a number of organizations including the Navy League Cadets, as well as the Assumption and Southminister United Churches. Taylor has also worked as a canvasser for both the Alberta Lung Association and Heart and Stroke Foundation.

 

In addition, she is an active member of the 13th Lethbridge Guide Group where she has worked on a number of projects including Operation Christmas Child and Yellow Fish Road projects and has volunteered at Ten Thousand Villages. Taylor also volunteers to dance and provide entertainment at the Senior Center and Extendicare.

 

Taylor’s generosity and kindness will serve her well in all future endeavors.



Junior High Award Recipients

 

 

 

DAVID WARD

David Ward is a fifteen year old who has demonstrated a maturity and concern for others far beyond his years.

 

He has been involved with Scouting for nine years, and has donated his time in a number of areas such as assisting junior Scouts in various projects. David also started a can and bottle recycling program in his neighborhood, with the funds going to assist other Boy Scouts.

 

In addition, David has given his time to a variety of other organizations within Lethbridge. This past November, he volunteered at the Helen Schuler Coulee Centre to assist in the wrapping of trees.  In the summer of 1999, David helped at the Lethbridge Community College in the Summer Student Exchange program with students learning English as a second language, and at Immanuel Lutheran Church where he organized games and refreshments.

 

David’s combination of enthusiasm, dedication and action make him an excellent leader of both today and of tomorrow!

 

 

KATRINA RUFF

Volunteering is obviously important to Katrina Ruff. This twelve year old has been a volunteer for over half her life!

 

Katrina, a grade seven student at Gilbert Patterson, was only in kindergarten when she first assisted with canvassing—something she continues to do today. She started volunteering at the “Ready,Set,Read” program at the Lethbridge Public Library the summer after she finished grade 4.  Katrinia has donated her time to a variety of organizations and activities, such as baby-sitting the grade one and two classes at St. Mary’s School during lunch, assisting with the Coulee Cean-up and hillside reclamation planting at Helen Schuler Coulee Centre.

 

Katrina is also active with the 15th Lethbridge Guides where she has volunteered to paint fish on storm sewers for the Yellow Fish Road program, delivered telephone books, sold cookies and served tea and baking for the Guide Tea.

 

Katrina’s kindness, enthusiasm and dedication shine through in everything she does.



High School Award Recipients

 

 

NICOLE KIRKHAM

Whether it’s other students or community members, Nicole Kirkham works to help those around her.

 

This seventeen year old is very involved with a number of activities at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute.  Nicole co-founded Peer Support 1997, and is currently the President of this program.  She is also the secretary of the Student Council and a member of the Pep Club.  Behind the scenes she has served as a stage manager for the Fall Production of “Get Smart”, and has volunteered as a scorekeeper for the volleyball teams.

 

Nicole has been volunteering for Lethbridge Association for Community Living for the past four years as a ticket seller and paymaster for the monthly bingo fundraisers.

 

Nicole’s hard work and compassion has truly made a difference to those around her.

 

SARAH KISH

Sarah Kish provides comfort and encouragement to those around her.

 

This fifteen year old student at Catholic Central High School  volunteers with the Chinook Health Region as an Office Assistant, Gift Shop Helper, Ped Pal, and has assisted with ice water delivery, as well as special events and fundraisers. Sarah  has also volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society and the Terry Fox Run where she was involved with public speaking for media events and participated in presentations at schools in our community . She has also helped out at the YWCA during the Family Fun Fest and as a Santa’s Helper during the Christmas season.

 

Sarah hopes to become a child/youth care worker or counselor—areas in which she will excel due to her compassionate nature and desire to help others.

 



Post Secondary Award Recipients

 

 

MARISA FERRAIUOLO

Marisa Ferraiuolo, nineteen, has an extensive and diverse volunteer background.

 

This University of Lethbridge student started volunteering at the Helen Schuler Coulee Centre when she was 14, where she quickly advanced to her current position as a program assistant and leader.

 

Marisa has given her time to act as a volunteer coordinator for the Canadian Red Cross and as an activities organizer for Canada Day celebrations.  In addition to canvassing for the Alberta Lung Association and Canadian Mental Health, Marisa has also participated in the Operation Red Nose program as a volunteer, has been involved as a pediatrics volunteer at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital, is a reader with the “Ready, Set, Read” program at the Lethbridge Public Library, has been a World Citizens Centre conference facilitator and student leadership workshop/roundtable facilitator at Winston Churchill High School, and has been a Students Against Drinking and Driving member.

 

Marisa’s enthusiasm and desire to help others is gratefully appreciated by all of those who know her.

 

 

KELLY HALL

Kelly Hall works hard to help others. This Criminal Justice student at Lethbridge Community College has dedicated over 4,100 hours of on call time with the Victim Services Unit in Coaldale.

 

Kelly has volunteered in a number of areas in the Victim Services Unit including responding to calls at all hours to help victims of crime, tragedy and trauma. She has participated in community awareness booths and with community presentations in Coaldale and surrounding areas.

 

She has donated her time to a number of organizations in the past including coaching volleyball, canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society and Heart and Lung Association, serving as president and vice president with Students Against Drinking and Driving and has volunteered for the Victim Services Unit in both Coaldale and Swift Current.

 

Kelly’s dedication and concern for others will serve her well in her chosen career as a R.C.M.P. officer.
